Airsoft is all about being able to make decisions in the field, on the fly, based on the circumstances of the engagement.

Where we play, we have no MED distance within reason, (No shooting at someone from like, 20 feet.) so people DO fear getting hit, as it'll occasionally draw blood... and after you've killed someone with superior tactics and firepower multiple times, they DO fear you. Because they've been psychologically beaten already.

If you're crossing an open field to a heavy tree line, you might want to rethink just what you're doing.
If you can't SEE where your opponents can hide, you shouldn't be running into the situation.

Now, my personal philosophy is to aggressively take ground, and outflank opponents. When this isn't possible, I think it's then best to use superior range and accuracy to keep them at LEAST pinned down, or possibly take them out.

But, my tactics are based around a highly mobile squad of 4 in light gear with upgraded weapons.
Your tactics need to suit what you're using.

Its called a danger area and below is how the military would cross if it couldn't be avoided.

A danger area is a place where the enemy can see you. You should avoid danger areas where possible. When studying the terrain you will cross, look for these and plan to go around them. Streams, rivers, roads, fields, and clear areas are all places that the enemy may be watching. When you come to a danger area that cannot be bypassed, you should cross it in this manner. First, send out security to the right and left. They should move along the edge for at least 50 meters looking for enemy positions. If they spot danger, they will return and advise the patrol leader. They will take up a position where they can cover the patrol when everyone crosses.

Next send the point team across. When they cross the right and left security must be ready to cover them. Once across, the point team will recon the far side of the danger area to insure there is no danger waiting for the patrol. When they are satisfied that it is safe, they will return to the danger area and signal. They will then pull far side security until the team is across.

Finally, everyone gets to the edge of the danger area and upon a signal, rushes across at once. As soon as they reach the far side they take up a position just like they always do when the patrol is stopped. The point team will advise the PL of what they have found ahead, and the patrol moves out quickly. If you were spotted crossing, there may be a fire mission on its way in. You must quickly get out of the area and be certain to leave little sign.

PostSubject: Crossing over....   Wed Dec 24, 2008 2:41 am

Those are good points Bravo and it goes back to my earlier post about the different
types of traveling formations that is current Army doctrine. (see Overwatch traveling
formations)

The point of all this is that crossing a danger area isn't some physical action alone.
It requires critical tactical thinking to address the potential contact with the enemy.
There are many ways to accomplish the task to minimize one's exposure to enemy
fires or at least have a plan to deal with it effectively.

That concept was the basis of the drills we practiced last Saturday at Operation
Humbug. After every drill, the debriefing exposed what worked and what didn't.
That is crucial in training and team leaders, if one calls themselves that, should
show some leadership by constantly evaluating the training effectiveness. (what
the Army calls Troop Leading Procedures or TLP).

Respectfully,
Mike W.
