Heads up, you may require this information in future Alabama Airsoft operations. As I am technologically challenged I am unable to provide pictures or illustrations to provide clarity. My intent is to provide a new dynamic to the game based on actual operations. Hope you enjoy what is coming.

-Improvised explosive devices have been effectively used in many recent conflicts, including:
-Balkans
-Gulf war I & II
-OIF Occupation Phase
-OEF
-Chechnya
-Palestine

-Enemy uses cheap, easy to assemble components to target opposing force soldiers and expensive, technically superior armored and non-armored vehicles
-Cheap, cost effective countermeasure to expensive, more advanced weapons technology
-Provides stand off
-Does not require enemy to commit forces (Force Multiplier)

Generic Types of IEDs:
1. Disguised, static IED; roadside bomb
2. Disguised, moveable (or portable) IED; includes vest IED-suicide bomber; walk-up style
3. Thrown IED (such as improvised grenade); often are thrown from overpass onto convoy
4. IEDs placed in, on, or under a target

IED Indicators
-An otherwise normally looking item with exposed:
1. Wires
2. Antenna
3. Detonation cord
4. Ordnance

-Dead animals
-Freshly dug holes
-New dirt/gravel piles
-Obstacles in roadway (channeling)
-Objects hanging from trees or electrical poles (tree ieds)

IED Aiming or Timing Points:
-Painted rock
-Mound of dirt or rocks (may have a can on top)
-Small colored flag next to road

-Most IEDs are not triggered by actions of the intended target and require an overwatch position for remote detonation
-Position of overwatch is greatly dependent on the range of the remote device
-Remote detonators have ranges of less than 150 feet
-Pull strings less than 100 feet
-Many situations involve secondary IEDs meant to inflict the real casualties after first IED detonates and are placed in likely safe havens or positions that will be used to take cover
-An IED may be used to stop a convoy, for an ambush

General Characteristics of IED Attack Sites
• Prior site (previous successes)
• Good over watch position
• An escape route for the enemy
• Obstacles between the IED site and initiation point

IED Emplacement

1. Deliberate emplacement in Stages: Normally Hidden
• Site Preparation - Hole Dug at a pre-determined IED location - no conspicuous material, except a shovel.
• Emplacement and camouflaged
• Primed & Initiated – usually during daylight hours
2. Hasty emplacement: Not as well camouflaged

PostSubject: IED remotes..   Fri Sep 18, 2009 3:07 am

Hi Bravo,

Don't forget that cellphones and pagers are also used to detonate IEDs. They are inexpensive
and untraceable pre-paid cellphones are a choice of people targeted devices. The hazard is
that a IED emplacer can get an errant call or page if it is connected to the detonator so they
don't actually turn on the pager or cellphone until the explosive is planted. They turn on the
cellphone or pager, then connect it to the detonator after the device has finished its power up
beeping/ringing routine.

Turning on a cellphone is dangerous as well because if you turn it on in the vicinity of a
detonator, a cellphone's radio waves to establish a link with the local celltowers can trigger
the detonator which can have the same effect as what happened to these guys:

IED Explodes with Emplacers

Cellphones and Pagers certainly give you a longer stand-off range but it doesn't come without
a increased risk of premature detonation not to mention that many US Army vehicles, especially
convoy vehicles, are now equipped with IED Suppression devices that keep cellphones, pagers, and
radio remote detonators from activating by jamming the recievers with a strong enough signal to
keep them from receiving the bomber's command signal.

Respectfully,
Esquire

Also, to note, when an explosion is imminent, someone must yell IED! and all personell in the area are to immediatly hit the dirt and cover their head, and afterward saty prone until either it is safe, or it is required to move to better cover.

As for practicing this, get fireworks and while practicing a patrol, light the fireworks (randomly by someone that is not on your team, like an instructor, friend, etc) and practice it.

Yes, soldier8193 is right about this method. We were practicing this today with an instructor we had, whom of which has just returned from Army Basic Combat Training. When on the move in any way, or even standing still, if an IED is spotted and the spotter realizes it's about to explode, the spotter is supposed to yell "IED!" upon contact, and the team seeks immediate cover AKA, prone position with your hands on your head. When the IED goes off, stay in prone with your face tucked in towards the ground until the immediate shock is over, then pull up your rifle and scan the surrounding area. If all of your team is OK,then form them up, and move out cautiously.

If you pull up your rifle, and there are enemy personnel in the area, you yell out contact left, right, etc., and the distance from you. Then you engage the enemy contact until the threat is eliminated. After the contact is neutralized, you signal for your team to form up, then move out cautiously.

Can we have suicide bombers as well? Seems fair if we have IED's.

Sounds good. We could do a mouse trap claymore strapped to someone's chest.

For the November event both the irregular forces have this capability and will likely employ it.

There appears to be some confusion abouit the use of IEDs for the November gaem. Both of the Phelan rebels and the Cordovan National Guard will have this cpability. Both Arian and Corona will have Demo teams to clear IEDs. The IEDs are not the primary target it is the operator. The IED information posted earlier is intended to provide indications that IEDs are in use in the vicinity and to allow the force encountering them to neutralize the operator.

IEDs for this game consist of airsoft Claymores, that can be recovered and used if not detonated, and CO2 powered mines. There may be a few other types if I have time to buld them. All IED type will be shown to both teams prior to play commencing.

Any questions please ask.
