PostSubject: KJW M700, a long road a head   Mon Oct 05, 2009 7:39 pm

From over the years of having this rifle loam in the shadows and periodically smack me up-side the head I have grown a fear that only a sand castle could understand. Its a fear that is not recognized immediately or even noticed lately. Its presence is abrupt and obscure.

Once, I was standing in the field, behind Zac's, with my support weapon mowing down fellow players without any reason for caution. We were on the assault. Wave after wave their trek from the respawn tree begin to bear a path but I stood my ground only to relish in the refresh of more. I was 170' away when a .3g BB impacts the side of my nose. Yeah, this rifle works when it works! I nearly fell over. "Nice shot, Zac."

From what I understand the KJW M700 is older than SCA. It has passed through several handlers and in general been disregarded as an unfieldable replica. Its high FPS, random velocity spikes and erratic hop-up provides a thrill ride of disappointment to any serious sniper. We have chrono reports of over 700FPS but its uncontrollable. Frustrating would be a good word to describe this replica. It has all the power you could want. Its a Tanaka M24 clone and it feels great. But there was no way to get it to shoot with a reliable grouping. It seemed to just be a poor purchase.

I have recently come into ownership of one of, the KJW M700, these rifles. I enjoy tinkering around with replicas and I figured I would try my hand at it. I have lots of airsoft hardware and some that might come in handy. I use CO2 frequently now and I have a nice air rig. I might be able to figure out the KJW M700 and actually be able to achieve the holy grail of distance.

We'll see...

I traded a 9.6v battery and a charger for this replica. The deal also included two 10rnd mags and scope. I traded the KJW mags for a 29rnd Tanaka mag and swapped the scope with another one I had laying around. Its not a good time to blow a bunch of money on airsoft right now but I still feel the need to tinker with stuff. This project seems to be a good idea and still relatively cheap.

So far, I have steppled the stock and focused on correcting the velocity fluctuation. Accuracy is a bi-product of both hop-up and consistency. The KJW mags fluctuated up and down 75FPS from their average. The Tanaka mag fluctuated about 50FPS and I'm still looking for better performance. My goal is an 5FPS, up or down, fluctuation within a 10FPS range.

The research I've done shows that aftermarket parts can help. There was some really surprising results on the Airsoft Canada Forums. They were using a Tanaka AICS but the mags are the same I think I should be able to get comparable results. In both of these replicas the mags seem too be the most important part. These are parts I plan to replace:

Striker plate
Striker spring
Plunger

Yes, I'm aware of his Right Hook Fab. I talk to him every now and then. I'll give him a call soon. I would like to see how his rifle is doing.
